Dracaena Compacta

Dracaena Compacta is a variety of dracaena distinguished by a dense rosette of dark green, glossy leaves. With its neat and elegant appearance, it is widely used to decorate both residential and office interiors. The plant is easy to care for but requires proper conditions to remain healthy and decorative for many years.

Placement

Dracaena prefers bright, diffused light. The best position is near east- or west-facing windows. On the south side, sheer curtains or blinds should be used to protect the leaves from burns. In insufficient light, the plant grows more slowly, and its leaves lose their shine and vibrant color. The ideal location is a spacious living room, bedroom, or office. Dracaena also tolerates artificial lighting well, making it suitable even for rooms without windows.

Watering

Watering should be moderate. The soil should dry 2–3 cm deep before the next watering. In summer, watering twice a week is sufficient; in winter, once every 10–12 days. Water stagnation must be avoided, as dracaena is very sensitive to excess moisture and may rot. It is best to use soft, settled water. To keep the leaves healthy and shiny, wipe them regularly with a damp cloth and occasionally spray the plant.

Feeding

During the active growth period, from April to September, dracaena should be fed with liquid complex fertilizers for ornamental foliage plants. The optimal frequency is once every 2–3 weeks. In winter, the plant rests, and fertilization is not required. Regular feeding stimulates new leaf growth and helps maintain rich, vibrant color.

Repotting

Young dracaenas should be repotted every 2 years in spring. Mature plants require repotting every 3–4 years. Between repottings, it is advisable to replace the top layer of soil. The soil should be light, fertile, and well-draining. A mix of turf soil, leaf soil, peat, and sand is ideal. The pot must have drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.

Temperature

The optimal temperature for Dracaena Compacta is between +18 and +25 °C. Sudden temperature fluctuations and drafts may cause leaf drop. In winter, the plant can tolerate as low as +16 °C, but not below. Since dracaena is not frost-resistant, it must be protected from cold air, whether from outdoors or air conditioners.

Pruning

Dracaena requires formative pruning, especially as it matures. If the plant becomes elongated, the stem can be shortened in spring or summer. New shoots will then emerge, making the crown denser. Dry or damaged leaves should also be removed regularly. Pruning helps maintain a compact shape and promotes healthy growth.

Conclusion

Dracaena Fragrans Compacta is an elegant and resilient plant, ideal for both homes and offices. With proper care, it retains dense, green foliage, purifies the air, and adds beauty and tranquility to any interior.
